Philippe Blais-Savoie scored two minutes into overtime and
Kaidan Mbereko had a season-high 37 saves to lead Colorado College to a 3-2 victory over 4
th-ranked North Dakota Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Blais-Savoie took a cross-ice pass from Wilson Björck, raced down the left side and fired a wrist shot past UND goalie Jan Spunar from the top of the left circle to give the Tigers the extra point in the NCHC standings and Spunar (23 saves) his first loss of the season.
Ryan Alexander and
Drew Montgomery also scored for the Tigers, who improved to 9-9-3 and 3-5-3 in the NCHC and 6-1-1 in the last eight games against the Fighting Hawks, tying the best eight-game stretch against UND in program history.
North Dakota (16-5-0, 8-3-0, NCHC) struck first when Ellis Rickwood scored at the 6:18 mark of the first period. Mbereko saved shots from Will Zellers and Mac Swanson in front of the net, but Rickwood scored with a backhander from the slot.
Montgomery, from Grand Forks, N.D., evened the game with a wrist shot from the left circle that hit the far post and in past Spunar just 1:33 into the second period.
Seth Constance collected the assist on Montgomery's second goal of the season.
Alexander gave the Tigers their first lead of the game at the 9:50 mark of the middle frame.
Connor Hvidston's shot from the right circle was blocked by a UND defender in front and Alexander scored while falling to the ice at the left post.
The Tigers had a golden chance to extend the lead midway through the third period, but Spunar stopped a breakaway by
Mateo Mrsic at the 10:20 mark.
With Spunar on the bench, UND tied the game with 2:09 remaining in the final frame as Ben Strinden put the puck past Mbereko during a scrum in front of the Tiger net.
Colorado College had to withstand a North Dakota power play for the final 36 seconds of the third period and first 1:24 of the overtime after
Björck was called for boarding.
UND outshot the Tigers, 39-26, including a 17-7 advantage in the third period. Neither team scored on the power play, North Dakota was 0-for-3 and the Tigers were 0-for-2.
The teams will battle again on Saturday, Jan. 10, at Robson Arena, beginning at 6 p.m.
