Tigers Blank #10 UMass Behind Unger's First Career Shutout

Jackson Unger had 32 saves and posted his first career shutout Friday night, leading Colorado College to a 2-0 victory over No. 10 UMass at Robson Arena.

Mats Lindgren scored in the first period and Drew Montgomery notched an empty-netter with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Tigers to their fifth consecutive season-opening victory.

Lindgren scored the first goal of the campaign at the 14:09 mark of the opening frame. Klavs Veinbergs gathered the puck at the red line and fired a shot from the right circle that was saved by UMass goalie Ethan Eskit. The puck caromed to Lindgren at the left circle and he buried it past Eskit just inside the far post.

Unger took over from there, coming up just one save shy of his career high, but produced the best outing of his young career. After making nine and eight saves in the first two periods, respectively, he stopped 15 UMass shots in the third period, including three on a penalty kill in the final five minutes of the contest.

Montgomery put home the insurance goal with 12.7 left off an assist from Bret Link.

Lindgren led the Tigers with six shots and Philippe Blais-Savoie paced all players with five blocks.

CC killed three penalties and was 0-for-1 on the power play.

The teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday, Oct 3, at Robson Arena, beginning at 6 p.m. MT.
