CC Sweeps 50 Free Podium, Win Relay and Take Lead at SCAC Championships

Colorado College combined sprint dominance and relay strength Thursday night at the SCAC Championships in Garland, Tex., sweeping the podium in the 50 freestyle and taking over the team lead.

CC holds first place with 324 points through 12 events.

The day began with a statement swim in the 400 freestyle relay time trial. Sarah Buchman, Megan Simonson, Adeline Turner and Julia Cox combined for a school-record time of 3:29.87, rewriting the program mark.

The Tigers controlled the 50 freestyle championship final, going 1-2-3. Julia Cox captured the conference title in 23.92, Megan Simonson finished second in 24.10 and Sarah Buchman placed third in 24.14. CC placed five swimmers in the championship final overall and added consolation points from Adeline Turner (9th) and Margaret Rauth (10th).

Distance points followed in the 500 freestyle, where Annie Engstrom won the SCAC title in 5:05.34. Alyssa Tunggal added a third-place finish (5:18.47) to give CC a pair of podium swims in the event.

In the 200 IM, Isabella Cole finished second in 2:15.62, while Charlotte Flory (4th), Riley Romisher (5th) and Maddy Golier (6th) stacked championship-final points to continue CC's depth scoring.

The evening concluded with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Livi Woolery, Cole, Buchman and Cox combined for a winning time of 3:59.23 to secure 40 points. CC's B relay of Lizzie McWilliams, Flory, Tunggal and Turner added 18 points with a ninth-place finish (4:02.94).

"Our women set the tone this morning with a school record in the 400 free relay, and that momentum carried throughout the day," head coach Jen Buffin said.  "We've emphasized using the morning swims to position ourselves for strong finals performances, and they delivered. Two individual champions, a dominant 400 medley relay win to close the night, and a wave of lifetime bests it was a great step forward. You can feel the momentum building with this group."
