Three Colorado College players had a goal and an assist Friday night, but St. Cloud State's Cooper Wylie scored 16 seconds into overtime to defeat the Tigers, 6-5, at The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Â
Wylie took a pass from Austin Burnenik and beat CC goalie
Jackson Unger from the slot for the Huskies (16-15-0, 9-12-0 NCHC).
Â
Drew Montgomery,
Philippe Blais-Savoie and
Brandon Lisowsky each collected a goal and an assist and
Connor Hvidston had a pair of assists for the Tigers (11-14-4, 5-10-4).
Â
The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Blais-Savoie notched his seventh goal of the season at the 5:01 mark. He took a pass from Hvidston and his shot from the point snuck past SCSU goalie Patriks Berzens' glove and into the net.
Â
Montgomery, who collected the second assist on Blais-Savoie's goal, made it 2-0 at 12:48 of the opening frame. Hvidston sent the puck behind the net, but it took a strange bounce and right out front to Montgomery, whose first shot was saved by Berzins, but then on the rebound.
Â
St. Cloud State cut the lead in half when Tanner Henricks scored at the 5:52 mark of the second period. He skated down the right side, cut in towards the net, and placed a backhander past Unger.
Â
Klavs Veinbergs put the Tigers back up by a pair at 12:50 of the middle frame. Lisowsky sent a pass from the side boards to Veinbergs, who was all alone on Berzins and beat him from the slot for his team-leading 10
th goal of the season.
Â
The Huskies again cut the deficit to one when Burnevik sent a one-timer past Unger from the right circle with 2:49 remaining in the second period, then evened things up when Nolan Roed completed a 2-on-1 rush with a wrister from the right circle.
Â
However,
Bret Link scored his sixth goal of the season with 39 seconds remaining in the frame when he deflected a shot by Wilson Bjorck past Berzins to give CC a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.
Â
SCSU tied it once again with Ryan Rosborough scored at the 2:44 mark of the third period, but Lisowsky made it 5-4 with a wrister from the slot at the 4:45 mark for his fifth goal of the season.
Â
Gavyn Thoreson evened the game at 5-5 at the 11:45 mark when he flipped a rebound shot past Unger, setting up overtime.
Â
Unger finished with a career-high 33 saves, while Berzins had 19, as SCSU held a 39-24 advantage in shots. The Tigers did not have a power-play opportunity as SCSU's lone penalty was associated with coincidental calls. CC killed off all three of St. Cloud State's power plays.
Â
The teams wrap up their weekend and season series on Saturday, Feb. 14, beginning at 6 p.m. (CT).
