Montgomery, Mbereko Lead Tigers Past St. Cloud State

Drew Montgomery scored twice and added an assist and Kaidan Mbereko made a season-high 38 saves to lead Colorado College to a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

Ryan Alexander collected a pair of assists for the Tigers (12-14-4, 6-10-4 NCHC), who took four points and the season series from SCSU.

Montgomery, whose three points tied his career high, opened the scoring with his second goal of the weekend at the 9:47 mark of the first period. Fisher Scott got the puck to Alexander in the slot and he found Montgomery right next to him and the junior from Grand Forks cleanly beat SCSU goalie Yan Shostak from the left circle.

Adam Ingram tied the game for SCSU (16-16-0, 9-13-0 NCHC) at 12:07 with a wrister from the left circle.

Colton Roberts put the Tigers back in front with an outstanding individual effort. He blocked a shot in the CC end, took the puck down the left side and beat Shostak top shelf from the left circle for his third goal of the season.

The Tigers took a two-goal into the third period after Connor Hvidston scored with 30.5 seconds left in the second period. Montgomery fired a rocket from the slot the Shostak stopped but the puck flipped up in the air and dropped behind him in the crease and Hvidston poked it into the net.

Montgomery closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 2:16 remaining in the third period.

Mbereko was solid throughout the game, but he earned his 56th career win in the final 20 minutes, making 18 saves, including four during an SCSU power play midway through the third period.

St. Cloud State outshot the Tigers for the second straight night, 39-27 on Saturday.

The Tigers play their final regular-season series at home next weekend against Western Michigan, beginning on Friday, Feb. 20.
