Colorado College used a dominant second half to pull away for a 75-56 victory over Texas Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at Reid Arena.
After the teams battled to a 29-29 tie at halftime, CC (10-13, 8-6 SCAC) erupted for 46 second-half points while holding Texas Lutheran to just 27, turning a tight contest into a decisive conference win.
I'm thrilled with our guys' performance; this was a huge team win," head coach Jeff Conarroe said. "They played together, and they are starting to play well. I'm very proud of them. Their defense in the second half was spectacular, and then we really settled in and executed well as the game wore on. We have been defending well, but it was really great to put a good effort together on both ends of the floor for the last 20 minutes."
The first half featured steady back-and-forth play with four ties and two lead changes. CC built an early 7-0 advantage but Texas Lutheran answered late in the period, tying the game on a layup in the final minute before the teams entered the break even.
The turning point came early in the second half as CC used a 10-3 run to take control. Sophomore Gavin Carter sparked the surge with aggressive scoring and playmaking, while senior Asher Nofziger dominated the glass during the stretch.
CC continued to extend the margin midway through the period, pushing the lead into double figures after consecutive three-pointers from Carter and senior Orion Samikoglu. The Tigers' largest lead reached 26 points with just over two minutes remaining.
Carter led CC with 13 points and six assists. Nofziger recorded 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while senior Christian Drummond added 11 points. Senior Russell MacFarlane and junior Ty Hendler each chipped in nine points.
CC shot an efficient 54.7 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from three-point range in the game, including a scorching 56.3 percent shooting performance in the second half.
The Tigers also controlled the boards, outrebounding Texas Lutheran 35-31, and held advantages in points in the paint (36-30) and second-chance scoring (8-4).
Texas Lutheran (9-14, 4-10 SCAC) was led by Mason Wallace and Carter Lewis, who each scored 10 points.
"When we started rebuilding this program five years ago, we talked a lot about playing meaningful games late in the season and playing well," Conarroe said. "The table is set for that, and I'm excited for the next few weeks."
CC is back in action on Friday, Feb. 20th against Centenary at Reid Arena.Â
