th-ranked University of Chicago Thursday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Bean's goal, her 15
th of the season, capped a furious rally by the Tigers, who rallied from a 10-3 deficit with 6:45 remaining in the second quarter.
Trailing 14-12 in the final minute of regulation, Chicago's Kali Konstantinakos was issued a two-minute penalty with 37 seconds left and
Elsa Greene capitalized on the free position goal to cut the lead to 14-13.
CC's Sofia Nicklaus won the all-important draw control, then
Oliv Janerico took a pass from
Charlotte Iler and evened the score at 14-all with just 17 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Greene won the draw control to begin overtime and Bean came from behind the net to cleanly beat Chicago goalie Lily Brill and set off a mad rush onto the field by the Tigers.
The Maroons were on fire to begin the game, scoring the first four goals. Kaylin Oey collected the first goal of the contest just 39 seconds in, followed by goals from Avery Song, Peyton McGuire and Song again for a 4-0 lead midway through the first period.
Iler, who tied Janerico with a team-high four goals, scored twice to cut the Chicago lead in half with 2:42 left in the first quarter, but the Maroons scored six of the next seven goals, including one from Wynne Boggan, for their 10-3 advantage. The Tigers gained a bit of momentum before halftime as
Meghan Collins and
Meilani Molina scored to make it 10-5 at intermission.
That momentum was evident in the third quarter, as CC kept narrowing the gap. After an early goal by Boggan at 11:47, Greene responded with a player-up goal at 10:55. Iler, with an assist by Janerico, added another at 9:13, followed by a quick goal from Bean just a minute later. Janerico and Iler each added a free position goal, with Iler's coming in the final minute, to close the quarter with Chicago leading 13–10.
The Tigers continued their comeback in the fourth quarter as Janerico and Greene scored in the first five minutes to make it 13-12. Song (game-high five goals) scored for the Maroons midway through the frame, setting up CC's late-game heroics.
Greene added three goals and Bean scored twice, while Iler added two assists for a game-high six points.
Cassidy Schnaufer made seven saves as Chicago outshot CC, 33-29, including a 21-20 advantage in shots on goal.
"This was an absolute team win," head coach AJ Johnson said. "Even when we were down, we never felt out of it and never lost hope. We chipped away, executed in the big moments, and rode the momentum wave when it came. Our energy stayed high, but we were calm when it mattered most. It was a battle, especially on the draw, but that final minute was unreal, scoring two goals to force overtime. A place we've been before this season and this time, we finished the job in under a minute, which was an amazing goal by
Grace Bean."
The Tigers (10-3, 5-0 WIAC) return to conference action at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, April 18, beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
