The Colorado College women's tennis team captured its first conference tournament title in program history Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Concordia University in the SCAC Championship Match.
Â
The Tigers, ranked 24
th in the latest ITA Division III poll, had to wait a while to celebrate as drizzle postponed the match several times. The match started in Kerrville, Texas, and finished in San Antonio.
Â
That didn't seem to bother them too much as they won their 12
th match against SCAC opponents without dropping a team point.
Â
Colorado College (20-3) took an early 1-0 lead by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches.
Lucia Moravek and
Aspen Young defeated Johanna Winkler and Aria Moreni, 6-0, in the No. 1 match, then
Lindsay Popeo and
Avery Hickman clinched the point with a 6-1 victory over Kailey Albrecht and Alyssa Mae Estrella at the No. 3 spot. At that point, the No. 2 match was pulled, with
Ally Lowe and
Kala Komanduri leading Valerie Sanchez and Emily Pullen, 3-2.          Â
Â
The top-seeded Tigers then won three singles matches to clinch the championship. Moravek opened things with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Moreni at the No. 4 position, then Young made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Winkler at the top spot.
Â
Lowe clinched the match and set off a huge celebration with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Sanchez at No. 2.
Â
The Tigers, who will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history and first since 1986, will find out who and where they play during the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Selection Show on Monday, May 4, at 10 a.m. (MT) on NCAA.com.
