Shelley Small is in her fourth season as an assistant coach at Colorado College. Her background in volleyball spans over thirty years, both as a Division I player, high school, club, and college coach. Shelley was a four-sport athlete at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas, and went on to be a middle blocker and outside hitter at Baylor University, where she was named Rookie of the Year, All-Southwest Conference and team captain for two seasons. She was the first scholarship volleyball player at Baylor.
In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Shelley coached volleyball at L.D. Bell High School, Grapevine High School, and coached club with North Dallas VBC, Mid-Cities VBC, Team North Texas, Victory VBC, and 900. She also started the fast-pitch softball program at L.D. Bell, where her team reached the Regional Semi-Finals of the 5A Texas State Championship Tournament in just their third season.
In 2013, Shelley took the helm at Air Academy High School, located on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy. In her first season there, the Kadets went all the way to the 4A State Championship match. She was also the Manager of Coaching Education at USA Volleyball and head boys’ coach at Cheyenne Mountain High School. Currently, Shelley is the Director of Boys’ Volleyball with Team Colorado VBC and coaches the 17’s team.
Off the court, Shelley enjoys the trails and mountains of Colorado, hiking with her silver lab, Cooper, and playing the keyboard and guitar.
