Resuming their long-standing rivalry and annual battle for the Gold Pan, Colorado College and the University of Denver tangle for the first time this season in a high-profile Western Collegiate Hockey Association series that will reach millions of television viewers.

The teams open their two-game set at DU's Magness Arena on Friday, facing off at 7:37 p.m. (MT), before meeting in a 5:07 p.m. (MT) rematch at the Colorado Springs World Arena on Sunday.

While the series opener will be telecast regionally on FSN Rocky Mountain, Sunday's contest at home is scheduled to air live nationally on ESPNU.

Undefeated at 4-0-2, the Tigers are ranked No. 1 nationally for the second consecutive week. They are off to their best start since the 2003-04 campaign, when they went 5-0-1 before suffering a 5-2 home-ice loss  to Denver. They were 3-0-1 a year ago before getting swept in non-conference play at the University of New Hampshire.

The Pioneers, 4-1 overall, also are 2-0 in WCHA play. CC and DU enter the weekend tied for second in the league standings but have two games in hand with frontrunner Minnesota, which currently owns a three-point lead. Colorado College is 6-1-2 in the last nine games between the teams, including a 3-1 mark last season when they Tigers claimed possession of the Gold Pan for the ninth time in its 15 years of existence.
