Tigers blitz UAB with balanced attack

Hulyo records first career shutout

Playing at friendly Stewart Field for the first time in almost a month, Colorado College gave head coach Geoff Bennett plenty to smile about on Friday.

Kelsey Wise and Kelly LaVoie each scored a goal and assisted on another, propelling the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over UAB in their Conference USA home opener.

Ericka Baer and Molly Uyenishi also scored for CC, who survived a 47-minute lightning delay late in the first half to improve to 8-3-1 overall for the season and 2-1 in league play. The Blazers, who upset No. 20-ranked UCF (Central Florida) by a 4-1 count a week earlier, dropped to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in C-USA.

“I love the fact that we had four different goal scorers,” Bennett said after watching his team out-shoot the visitors from Birmingham, Ala., by a 25-10 margin overall. “Individuals are stepping up, and it's nice to see us clicking on all cylinders in the final third. We worked on that a lot in training this week, and it showed today.

“We generated a lot of shots, about the same number in the first (13) and second half (12), which shows that our fitness level is very good. UAB has played an extremely tough schedule, with some impressive results, so obviously I'm very pleased.”

Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Hulyo, who made her third consecutive start for Colorado College, made six saves to record the first shutout of her collegiate career.

Wise provided Hulyo with all the cushion she would need just 7:56 into the match, taking a lead pass from Alexa Bannerman on the left side and finding the far corner of the Blazers net for her first goal as a Tiger. Wise set up LaVoie's tally in the 22nd minute to make it 2-0.

Baer and Uyenishi clicked less than four minutes apart early in the second half, Uyenishi converting on a header off a corner kick by Beth Wright, to round out the scoring as CC improved to 5-0-1 on its home field..
