Tyrone Petrakis converted a penalty kick with 1:13 remaining to give No. 1 Trinity University a 1-0 victory over Colorado College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas.
Trinity remained undefeated with a 10-0 overall record and took over sole possession of first place in the SCAC with a 3-0 mark. CC slipped to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
“We lost 1-0 to the No. 1 team in the country on its home field,” head coach
Horst Richardson said. “The soccer community should respect that result.
“I think we scared them. In the grand scheme of things, I'm satisfied with the way we played.”
Colorado College was shutout for the second time this season and saw its five-game winning streak come to an end. CC had a chance to get on the board first, but
Trevor Cobb's penalty kick in the 69th minute went just over the cross bar.
Brian Engle made six saves for Colorado College, which was outshot for the first time this season. Patrick Johnson had five saves for Trinity.
“Our defense was solid and
Brian Engle was outstanding,” Richardson said.
CC started slowly in the first half, managing only two total shots and just one on goal. The Tigers picked up the pace in the second half, launching nine shots, including four on goal.
Colorado College will play host to Nebraska Wesleyan University and Westminster College of Utah in a pair of non-conference matches next Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
