CC and Wisconsin play to 1-1 draw

Tigers head home with three points

Colorado College battled gallantly again on Saturday and reaped a modest but satisfying reward.

By skating to a 1-1 tie with the University of Wisconsin in the finale of their two-game series at the Kohl Center, the surprising Tigers headed home from Madison with three big points on opening weekend of their 2009-10 WCHA season.

Freshman goaltender Joe Howe, who also backstopped Friday's 4-2 victory over the Badgers, made 26 saves while senior left wing Bill Sweatt scored a power-play goal just 6:46 into the contest to give the visitors a lead they held until early in the third period. Senior defenseman Nate Prosser's blast from between the faceoff circles deflected off the heel of Sweatt's skate, changed direction and beat UW goalie Scott Gudmandson through the five-hole.

CC roared out of the gates, out-shooting Wisconsin by a 15-6 margin in that first frame. Prosser's tally, set up by junior winger Stephen Schultz and sophomore defenseman Gabe Guentzel, came during a 5-on-3 man-power advantage after UW took the game's first three penalties.

Colorado College, which finished with a 32-27 edge overall in shots on goal, killed all five Badger power plays in the stalemate.

Wisconsin pulled even at 2:43 of the final frame when Ben Street retrieved his own rebound after hitting the post on breakaway, sent the puck back toward the net from a bad angle and watched it carom into the cage off the left shoulder of Howe.

The Tigers continued to apply pressure throughout the rest of the game, including the five-minute overtime, when they forced Gudmandson to stop five shots and fired just wide on several other opportunities.

CC, now 2-1-1 overall, played again without senior right wing and team captain Mike Testwuide, who left Friday's game for good after taking a crushing check in the opening minute of play. Sophomore David Civitarese replaced Testwuide in the lineup on Saturday. Senior center Andreas Vlassopoulos, who suffered an injury last weekend, did not even make the trip to Wisconsin.
