Big Cats win 11 of 16 races to sink Wheaton

Colorado College won 11 of 16 events and held on for a 147-146 victory at Wheaton College on Thursday night in the first of back-to-back meets on the East Coast.

Jordan DeGayner posted season-best times en route to victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.21), the 100 free (48.29) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.60). He also swam a leg on the Tigers' winning team in the 400 medley relay.

Devin Wahl chopped a fraction over 30 seconds off his season-best mark and won the 1,000 free by more than 20 seconds in a time of 10:19.39. He went two for two in the distance events by finishing first by more than 17 seconds in the 500 free by clocking in at 4:57.95. Wahl also swam the anchor leg on CC's winning team in the 400 free relay.

Tom Grossinger recorded a season-best time while winning the 100 backstroke in 55.90, and he won the 50 breaststroke with a mark of 28.41 in the first time the Tigers have raced that distance this season in an event other than the freestyle.

“Devin was such a star today, winning the 1000 and 500, with huge drops in both events, as well as anchoring the meet clinching 400 free relay,” head coach Anne Goodman James said. “Tom again showed his intense competitiveness, swimming one event in each stroke. His 100 back (an off event for him) was an amazing 55.90.”

Colorado Colleges other winners were Tyler Larrabee with a season-best mark of 1:04.18 in the 100 breast and Joseph Shaner with 212.70 points, an improvement of 33.30 points.

“Going this unusual event order with the 50's of the strokes definitely played to Wheaton's strengths in sprinting and not ours in the longer events, so we had to really be on our game,” Goodman James said. “While we pulled out wins in more events, their depth kept the meet close. We had to go 1-3 in the free relay, and we barely pulled it out to win the meet by one point.”

Colorado College is back in the pool on Friday afternoon when they swim against Tufts University in Medford, Mass.
