Pirates sink Colorado College in overtime

Emily Guthrie buried a three a three pointer to put Whitworth University ahead with two minutes to go and Emily Travis made four free throws and had set up another score during the final 50 seconds as the Pirates defeated Colorado College, 79-76 in overtime, on Saturday afternoon at CC's Reid Gymnasium. 

Freshman sensation Collier Clegg scored four of her game-high 25 points to give the Tigers a 68-66 lead with 2:54 remaining in the extra period, but CC missed its next four shots and turned the ball over once during the next 2:30 and Whitworth slowly pulled away.

Clegg made a long three pointer to pull Colorado College to within 74-71 with 22 seconds to play, but the Tigers were never able to get closer than three points the rest of the way.

Liz Horaitis scored two of her team-high 18 points to give the Pirates a 46-33 lead with 14:09 to play, but seven different players scored during a 19-3 run that gave CC a 52-49 lead with 8:11 to play.

Whitworth built a 64-58 lead after Leah Pomante sank a pair of free throws with 2:58 remaining in regulation, but the Tigers scored six straight points and tied the game with 58 seconds to go on a layup by Becky Luetjen.

CC had a chance to win the game, but Clegg's jumper from the right side of the lane rolled off the rim with five seconds to go.

Luetjen recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Cassie Pilkinton added 12 points for the Pirates.

In the first game of the 2009 Colorado College Thanksgiving Tournament, Morningside College defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering, 90-62.

The tournament continues at 1 p.m. Sunday when Whitworth faces Morningside. The Tigers play host to MSOE at 3 p.m.
