Saturday's game at Magness Arena had just about everything anyone could ask for – except a winner.
But Colorado College isn't about to complain.
Senior right wing
Mike Testwuide's third goal of the night, on a penalty shot with 40 seconds left in regulation, earned the Tigers a 4-4 tie in the finale of their weekend series with the University of Denver.
CC was awarded the penalty shot when Denver defenseman Matt Donovan lifted the back of the net off the ice as freshman
William Rapuzzi was shooting a loose puck into the cage during a wild scramble in front.
Testwuide, whose unassisted shorthanded tally at 3:14 of the third period cut a 4-2 DU lead in half, skated in and faked to his forehand before beating Pioneers goalie Marc Cheverie with a backhand on the stick side. The team captain's first two goals came on wrist shots past Cheverie's glove side.
With the tie, Colorado College snapped a two-game losing skid and remained all alone in second place in the WCHA standings. The Tigers are 10-4-2 overall and 7-3-2 in league play, two points behind Denver and one ahead of a host of teams tied for third.
The hat trick was the first of Testwuide's collegiate career.
It put a damper on an outstanding performance by DU's Rhett Rakhshani, who struck for a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal in the second period to stake the home team to their 4-2 lead after 40 minutes of play. Rakhshani, who scored the game winner in Denver's 2-1 victory at the World Arena on Friday, also set up Kyle Ostrow's red lighter just 1:08 into the contest.
CC's
Brian McMillin evened the count at the 2:21 mark, shelving a wrist shot past Cheverie after the Pioneers coughed up the puck inside their own zone. Testwuide then put the visitors ahead on an odd-man rush with linemate
Stephen Schultz at 7:37 of that first period.
Jesse Martin converted on a Pioneers power play at 9:47 to tie it up again at 9:47 of the opening frame.
The Tigers went 0-for-7 on the power play while DU converted on two of eight opportunities, including one in the scoreless overtime.
