Tom Grossinger and
Tyler Larrabee each won two events and was swam legs on a pair of winning relay teams as CC defeated McMurry University, 148-39, on Saturday in the final meet of the first half of the season.
“The intensity was there from the beginning over what I saw yesterday,” Head Coach Anne Goodman James said. “Yesterday, they knew they didn't have much competition and they didn't do a good job of focusing on their own races. Today, they stepped up and went for it.”
Devin Wahl and Joseph Shaner also posted multiple victories as the Tigers won all 12 events to sweep McMurry for the second day in a row.
Grossinger got CC off the blocks quickly when he swam the leadoff leg in the 400-yard medley, helping the Tigers win the event in a time of 3:52.00. He came back three events later to post the team's season-best time in the 50 freestyle by touching the wall in 23.04, which was .16 faster than Flynn McGuire's time of 23.20 set on Nov. 7
The junior from Evanston, Ill., picked up his second individual victory in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.00, and he completed his day by swimming the anchor leg on CC's winning 400 free relay team, which turned in a time of 3:41.63.
In a addition to swimming legs on both winning relay teams, Larrabee won the 200 free by clocking in at 2:00.31, and his time of 2:16.53 was good for first place in the 200 butterfly.
Wahl continued to showcase his versatility by winning the 200 back in 2:06.82, which matched Jeff Nadel's season-best time set on Nov. 20, and taking first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30.84.
“Devin has really come into his own,” Goodman James said. “He continues to amaze us with his versatility and by winning even when we put him in his off events.”
Shaner posted season-best point totals on both boards, winning the 1-meter diving with a score of 219.98 and the 3-meter with 222.23 points.
“Our top swimmers are ahead of where they were at this point last year and I've been impressed with out newcomers.” Goodman James said. “We have several swimmers who have a shot at nationals.”
The Tigers will be idle until Jan. 13 when they complete their winner training trip in Southern California by participating in the California Lutheran Relays in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
