Despite a 30-point performance from
Melanie Auguste, Colorado College came up short in its quest to tie Trinity University for the top spot in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's West Division.
Krista Prato Matthews scored five her 11 points during the final 47 seconds, including two on free throws with just 11 seconds remaining that proved to be the difference, as TU hung on for a 70-69 over CC on Friday night in San Antonio.
Auguste finished the contest with 1,538 career points, climbing past Eleanor Kelly's (1999-2003) total of 1,533 for third place on the program's career list. She is now within 42 points of tying Sally Bush (1986-90) for second place.
Ali Marzella led TU with 20 points, while Kelsey Goodell added 11.
The game was every bit as close as the score indicated, with each team leading six times and seven ties. Neither team led by more than six points.
CC led 56-55 after Auguste drained a jumper with 9:27 to play, but Trinity responded with an 8-1 run and held the lead the rest of the way.
Colorado College, 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the SCAC, will go into next weekend's conference tournament as the No. 2 seed from the West Division and play the third seed from the East.
The Tigers will close out the regular season at Southwestern University on Sunday.
