CC comes from behind to sink Southwestern

Colorado College overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half to defeat Southwestern University, 64-59, in the regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon in Georgetown, Texas.

Melanie Auguste put the Tigers ahead for good with 52 seconds remaining, and then Eliese Hansberry and Becky Luetjen each knocked down a pair of free throws during the final 33 seconds to seal the victory.

Colorado College improved to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. CC's 16 victories are the most for the program since the 1989-90 team posted a 17-9 record. The Pirates dropped to 6-19 overall and 2-13 in the conference.

Auguste led the Tigers with 19 points, while Luetjen reached double-figures for the third consecutive game with 12 points and tied her season high with nine rebounds. Alyssa Aldaz added 11 points.

Colorado College led by as many as five points in the first half, but needed to score the final four points to forge a 33-33 tie after 20 minutes.

The Pirates scored eight consecutive points to build a 45-37 lead 5:11 into the second half and maintained that lead until Auguste scored seven consecutive points, including six on back-to-back three pointers.

Southwestern led by 54-49 with 7:19 remaining, but CC turned up the defensive pressure and allowed just five points the rest of the game while forcing five turnovers.

Jennifer Tindle led the Pirates with 18 points, while Natasha Azizi had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Colorado College will play Centre College in the first round of the SCAC Tournament next Friday at 8 p.m. CT. The winner will face the survivor of the Oglethorpe University -Millsaps College game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
