With
Kelly LaVoie providing the spark and
Tiffany Brown delivering the knockout punch, Colorado College left no room for suspense in its Conference USA opener on Friday.
LaVoie struck for a pair of goals just 84 seconds apart in the opening five minutes of play, and Brown clicked twice in the second half, propelling the Tigers to a 4-1 triumph over SMU at Stewart Field.
CC, which plays host to the University of Tulsa at noon (MT) Sunday, improved to 5-3-1 overall. The Mustangs dropped to 2-6.
"That's the most energy I've ever seen from our team during a block break," head coach
Geoff Bennett said after most of his players took their first final exam of the semester just two days earlier. "That's real exciting and something we can be proud of. It bodes well for Sunday. This kind of 'team first' attitude is going to carry us a long way."
LaVoie gave the Tigers an early lead with an unassisted tally at 3:10, chipping a rebound into the upper right corner of the net after
Ericka Baer's header of a
Beth Wright corner kick was blocked in the box. At 4:34, LaVoie scored from just outside the left post on a one-timer of Brown's pass from the right side.
SMU freshman Ryanne Lewis cut the deficit in half at the 16:59 mark, heading in a corner kick by Logan May for her first career goal.
But, just four minutes into the second half, Brown cut in from the right side to restore Colorado College's two-goal advantage after taking a nice pass from
Meredith Smith. The junior forward scored again in the 61st minute after a set-up by freshman
Brittney Lyman and finished the contest with five points.
CC wound up with 12 corner kicks in the match, compared to just three by the Mustangs, and launched 23 total shots. Sophomore keeper
Caitlin Hulyo made three saves to backstop the victory.
