Unhappy New Year for ice-cold Tigers

The only things missing was the wrapping paper and a bow.

Colorado College missed its last six shots and committed three turnovers during the final 3:23 as Southwestern University overcame an eight-point deficit to steal a 59-57 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Collier Clegg scored on a layup to give the Tigers a 57-49 lead with 4:20 to play, but that proved to be the last points CC would get.

Shae Seagraves scored the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds to play and put the Pirates up by two points on the second of two free throws with 12 seconds to go.

Colorado College had one shot to send the game to overtime, but a jumper by Alyssa Aldaz wouldn't fall and Southwestern escaped with the victory.

Becky Luetjen recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and also finished with four assists and four steals.

Kalli-Anne Kemling scored a season-high 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Emily Wattman-Turner added 12 points.

The Pirates were fortunate to be in the game at all.

CC dominated the boards with a 60-38 advantage, but 21 turnovers and a 28-11 disparity in free throws allowed Southwestern to stay within striking distance.

The Tigers shot a season-low .276 from the floor, making only 21 of 76 shots. CC went 7:40 without a point during the first half when the Pirates turned an 11-8 deficit into an 18-11 lead with 6:19 to play.

Katie Kern gave SU its biggest lead at 27-19 when she scored two of her 10 points on a layup with 3:19 remaining in the first half, but CC answered with five points to cut its deficit to three points after 20 minutes.

Staley Mullins led the Pirates with a game-high 16 points.

Colorado College slipped to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Southwestern improved to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Tigers wrap-up their two-game trip to Texas on Sunday at Trinity University in San Antonio.
