Frustrated offensively for the second consecutive Saturday, Colorado College finally experienced the agony of defeat.
The Tigers could muster only a second-period power-play goal by freshman left wing
Jaden Schwartz and suffered a 2-1 non-league setback to the University of Alaska at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks.
It was the first loss of the season for 18th-ranked CC, which will take a 2-1-1 record into next weekend's Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at Minnesota State University.
With Saturday's victory, the No. 14-ranked Nanooks claimed the championship of their third annual Brice Alaska Goal Rush tournament and improved to 3-1 for the campaign. A member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, they earned their first-ever NCAA Division I playoff bid last March.
Sophomore center Jarret Granberg staked UA to a 1-0 lead at 13:56 of the first period. After taking a pass from Andy Taranto in the neutral zone, Granberg crossed the Colorado College blue line and ripped a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Sophomore netminder
Joe Howe got a piece of the blast with his catching glove, but the puck floated up into the air behind him and fell across the goal line.
The Tigers pulled even at 6:04 of the middle frame when Schwartz scored on a rebound of defenseman
Gabe Guentzel's wrist shot from the point with two seconds remaining in CC's third of five power plays.
Rylan Schwartz also earned an assist on the tally.
But, less than two minutes later, Howe and
David Civitarese got crossed up with the puck deep in the Tiger zone. After Derek Klassen and Nik Yaremchuk forced a turnover to the left of the cage, junior center Carlo Finucci cashed in from the low slot to put Alaska back on top to stay.
Howe finished with 17 saves in the contest while junior Scott Greenham made 22 stops for the Nanooks.
