If Colorado College ever perfects its finishing touch, watch out!
Still struggling a bit to find the back of the net, the Tigers continued to flourish in every other aspect of the game while recording a 2-0 victory over Southern Miss at Stewart Field on Sunday.
CC out-shot the Golden Eagles by a 42-5 margin, firing away 21 times in each half, and finished with a remarkable 16-0 advantage in corner kicks.
At intermission, the match remained scoreless thanks to 12 saves by USM keeper Hannah Vanderboegh and a couple more by Vanderboegh's teammates on balls that were past her.
But, with less than two minutes gone in the second half, junior defender
Beth Wright provided all the offensive cushion that Colorado College would need to improve to 7-5-4 overall and 3-4-1 in Conference USA play. Sophomore forward
Brittney Lyman added an insurance tally on a penalty kick after being fouled in the 71st minute.
The Tigers, who opened the weekend with a 1-0 triumph over nationally ranked University of Central Florida on Friday, suddenly have climbed from 10th place in C-USA into a tie for sixth with East Carolina University. They travel to Marshall and ECU next weekend before wrapping up the regular season against UTEP at home on Oct. 29. The top six teams earn bids to the league's post-season tournament.
“We feel we're in a great place right now,” said head coach
Geoff Bennett. “We're peaking at the right time. Our play is getting better and better. We're excited to be going back on the road with an opportunity to keep all the positives going in the right direction.”
CC turned in another superb effort on defense, as well as offensively. Junior keeper
Caitlin Hulyo again needed to make only three saves, this time all in the first half, to post her seventh shutout of the season and 17th of her collegiate career.
Wright's game winner, which barely crossed the goal line in heavy traffic, came out of a wild scramble in front of Vanderboegh. Freshman midfielder
Madison Whitehead picked up the assist.
USM, 3-11-2 overall, remained winless in conference play at 0-7-1. Vanderboegh finished with 16 saves.
