Defense does disappearing act

Tigers porous in 9-4 loss to Minnesota

Colorado College matched a season high on Saturday for goals scored. Only trouble is, it gave up more than twice that many.

Paying the price for one of their poorest defensive efforts in recent memory, the Tigers suffered an embarrassing 9-4 loss to the University of Minnesota at the World Arena that completed a weekend sweep for the Gophers.

With the defeat, CC dropped below .500 for the first time this season, at 3-4-1 overall, and slipped to 1-3 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Freshman center Nate Condon, who had scored one goal previously, fueled the assault with a pair of tallies and three assists for Minnesota, which improved to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in WCHA play. Senior left wing Jacob Cepis, one of Condon's linemates, scored twice and helped set up two more red lighters as the visitors pelted Tiger goaltenders Joe Howe and Josh Thorimbert with 44 shots on net.

Freshman Thorimbert, who entered in relief of Howe at 3:57 of the second period and their team trailing 6-3, stopped 23 of the 26 attempts he faced the rest of the way.

Once again, it was freshman left wing Jaden Schwartz who provided most of Colorado College's offensive spark, clicking for his sixth and seventh goals of the season. Junior defenseman Gabe Guentzel and senior forward Tyler Johnson also scored for CC, which converted on two of four power plays for the night but gave up a shorthanded goal for the third time in four games. Sophomore right wing Andrew Hamburg finished with a couple assists.

Minnesota, which struck in the opening minute of both the first and second periods, built a 7-3 lead halfway through the contest.
