Once the floodgates burst open on Saturday, there was no stopping Colorado College.
CC scored, scored and scored some more in the final 37 minutes of play while powering its way to a 9-2 shellacking over arch-rival University of Denver in front of a delighted sellout crowd at the World Arena.
The victory ended a three game losing skid for the Tigers, who earned a split of their weekend series with DU and kept them in contention for reclaiming possession of the Gold Pan when the teams meet again later in the season.
They also overcame the frustration of failing on their first four power plays of the night to click on six of eight opportunities the rest of the way while out-shooting the Pioneers by a 44-17 margin overall.
Senior right wing
Stephen Schultz and freshman left wing
Jaden Schwartz fueled the assault with five points apiece. Schultz struck for a pair of goals and added three assists. Schwartz scored the game winner and helped set up four other tallies.
Denver held a 1-0 lead after the first period on the strength of Drew Shore's unassisted goal just 6:33 after the opening faceoff and 16 saves by freshman netminder Sam Brittain.
Junior center
Nick Dineen finally solved Brittain at 3:42 of the middle frame, deflecting Schultz's slap shot during Colorado College's fifth power play. Schultz and Schwartz added red lighters, also with the Tigers up a man, at 6:35 and 14:55 of the period to give the home team a 3-1 cushion after 40 minutes.
CC, now 4-5-1 overall and 2-4 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, exploded for six more goals in the wild third stanza, including two by senior forward Tyler Johnson. A pair of freshmen – center
Archie Skalbeck and defenseman
Eamonn McDermott – each notched the first of his collegiate career in the uprising. Junior defenseman
Gabe Guentzel, who collected a pair of assists earlier, also scored in the onslaught to finish with three points.
