Another sweep on the road for CC

Shorthanded Tigers finish off St. Cloud State, 5-2

No Jaden. No problem.

Playing without team and league scoring leader Jaden Schwartz for the first time this season, Colorado College refused to be denied on Saturday.

The Tigers fell behind early to a desperate St. Cloud State University squad but rallied for a 5-2 victory at the National Hockey Center that completed their second road sweep in nine days and extended their winning streak to five consecutive games.

Sizzling CC, now tied for fifth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, improved to 10-7-1 overall and 7-5 in league play with its seventh triumph in the last nine outings. St. Cloud State, which has lost seven of its last nine, fell to 5-11-2 overall and 3-8-1 in the WCHA.

SCSU's Ben Hanowski, who had a goal disallowed in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Tigers, scored on an odd-man rush to put the 11th-place Huskies up just 3:58 into Saturday's rematch. But that would be the only dent in the armor of sophomore goaltender Joe Howe, who made 29 saves while backstopping his fourth straight win between the pipes, until Mitch MacMillan clicked on a power play with 6:07 left in the contest.

Midway through the opening frame, Colorado College struck twice in a span of 25 seconds to turn the tide. At the 10:19 mark, junior defenseman Gabe Guentzel's shot from near center ice skipped past St. Cloud State netminder Dan Dunn, who earlier had earned an assist on Hanowski's tally. Then, at 10:44, sophomore winger William Rapuzzi shoveled a one-handed attempt past Dunn from in close that put the Tigers up 2-1 and sent the starting goalie to the bench in favor of Mike Lee.

During a delayed penalty, with an extra attacker on the ice and already on the power play, CC made it 3-1 with 3:01 left in the period. Senior forward Tyler Johnson, who now has scored nine times in the last nine games, notched his first of two goals in the game after some nice work in the zone by sophomore Rylan Schwartz and freshman Archie Skalbeck.

Rylan Schwartz and Rapuzzi, who finished with a pair of assists apiece in the victory, then set up a tip-in by senior winger Stephen Schultz early in the second stanza to completely deflate the struggling Huskies. Ironically, it was Rapuzzi who moved up from the fourth line to replace the younger Schwartz on the unit with Schultz and Rylan Schwartz.

Johnson added a four-on-four goal, his 11th of the season, in the third period.

Jaden Schwartz is due in Toronto, Ontario, on Sunday for the beginning of a four-day selection camp at which Team Canada's roster for the 2011 IIHF Junior World Championships will take shape.
