Hoopingarner, Kemling lead CC past Wildcats

Hannah Hoopingarner and Kalli Kemling combined for 31 points, including 11 in a row late in the first half, as Colorado College built an 18-point lead and cruised to a 74-64 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night at Reid Gymnasium.

Hoopingarner poured in nine of her 15 points during a span of 3:57 that began with a three-point basket with 2:06 remaining in the first half and ended with a pair of free throws just under two minutes into the second half, part of a 16-3 run that put CC in complete control.

Becky Luetjen gave the Tigers a 45-27 advantage when she buried a three-pointer from the above the key 2:19 into the second half. The junior guard finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and also dished out a season-best five assists.

The Wildcats trimmed their deficit to nine points on two different occasions during the final 1:09 on free throws by Samantha Neal, but CC sank all six of its free throws to secure the victory.

Kemling made seven of 14 field-goal attempts and finished with 16 points, her third game with double-figure points this season.

Marissa Gradoz grabbed eight rebounds, while Sydney Leichliter and Kemling added seven apiece, to help Colorado College record a 61-47 advantage on the glass.

After Neal knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:24 remaining in the first half to cut CC's lead to four points, Hoopingarner and Kemling ignited an 11-2 run that gave the Tigers a 40-27 lead after 20 minutes.

Neal led the Wildcats with 18 points. Her basket layup with 8:37 remaining in the first half gave JWU a 19-16 lead, but the Tigers went ahead for good with a 13-2 run that gave CC a 29-21 advantage with 4:37 to go before the break.  

Andrea Austin recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Sarah FitzPatrick added 14 points.

The Tigers improved to 2-6, while the Wildcats slipped to 3-7.

Colorado College makes the return trip Johnson & Wales on Sunday.
