CC runs out of time against Trinity

Jarrell Sweet's driving layup wouldn't drop as time expired and Trinity University escaped with a 79-78 overtime victory over Colorado College on Saturday night at Reid Gymnasium.

The loss spoiled a dramatic comeback that saw CC nearly overcome a six-point deficit during the final 1:36 of overtime. Nick Rose scored five straight points to pull Colorado College to within one, but CC had just five seconds to go the length of the court on its final possession.

Rose finished with a game-high 33 points, the fifth time this season he scored 30 or more points in a game.

Colorado College led 73-70 after Colin Madden knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner, but Luke Caldarera started a 9-0 Trinity run when he muscled his way through Kevin Osborne and was given the basket and a free throw.

Caldarera led TU with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Tobolowsky finished with 17 points, while Peter Garatoni added 11.

Trailing 58-48 with 10:24 remaining in regulation, CC used an 11-2 run to cut its deficit to on point with 6:28 to play. Three minutes later, Osborne gave Colorado College its first lead of the game when he made both ends of a one-and-one.

Sweet gave CC a 70-68 lead when he buried a three-point shot from the right wing with 42 seconds to play, but after Caldarera tied the game 15 seconds later, his jumper from the top of the key with two seconds left to play came up short.

Brady Ohlsen posted his fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

CC dropped to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Trinity improved to 11-12 overall and 8-7 in the SCAC.

Colorado College wraps up the regular season with games at Millsaps College and Hendrix College next Friday and Sunday, respectively. CC can clinch the final spot in the eight-team SCAC tournament with a victory over the Majors on Friday.
