Continuing its season-long habit of scoring quickly and in clusters, Colorado College completed its weekend work with a bang on Saturday.
CC exploded for three goals within a span of 3:14 early in the second period and rolled to a methodical 5-3 victory over Mercyhurst College at the World Arena.
With their second non-conference triumph in two nights, the 10th-ranked Tigers improved to 17-10-3 overall and surpassed their victory total of the entire 2008-09 campaign. Winners of three consecutive decisions overall, they now have 12 days off before resuming WCHA play with the opener of a two-game series at the University of Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 19.
The visiting Lakers, who occupy third place in the Atlantic Hockey Association, drew first blood in Friday's contest when Mike Gurtler's deflection found the back of the CC net during a Mercyhurst power play with just 5:34 elapsed.
Junior winger Tyler Johnson pulled Colorado College even at 8:02 of the first frame, setting the stage for the second-period fireworks that completely changed the complexion of the game. Johnson added an empty netter with less than a minute remaining in the victory.
Freshman
Andrew Hamburg snapped the 1-1 tie at 1:15 of the middle stanza, finding a loose puck in the goalmouth after
Mike Boivin's shot from the right point rolled around in front of the net.
Senior
Brian McMillin made it 3-1 at the 3:00 mark, shooting low through traffic from above the right faceoff circle to beat Lakers goaltender Max Strang, who was screened on the play. Senior team captain
Mike Testwuide, who earlier assisted on Hamburg's tally, struck for CC's second power-play goal of the night at 4:29 to cap the uprising.
Freshman goalie
Michael Shibrowski, making his first start as a Tiger, went the distance in net and finished with 31 saves. Boivin, a freshman defenseman, had a pair of assists.
All three Mercyhurst goals, including two by Matt Fennell, came on the power play.
