More accolades for Howe

Freshman goalie named to All-CHN Rookie Team

Freshman Joe Howe, who only a week ago was named to the All-WCHA Rookie Team, has added another honor  to his growing list of post-season accolades – this time at the national level.

On Thursday, Howe was one of six Division I players in the country named to the College Hockey News All-Rookie Team.

The Plymouth, Minn., native logged more time between the pipes in conference play than any goaltender in the WCHA in 2009-10. He started all 28 league games for the Tigers, playing more than 1,600 minutes in those outings while finishing the season with just under 2,100 overall. He backstopped all but two of CC's 19 victories, finishing 17-16-3 with a 2.80 goals-against average and .907 saves percentage.

Joining him on the All-CHN Rookie Team are forwards Stephane Da Costa of Merrimack, Danny Kristo of North Dakota and Andy Taranto of Alaska, along with defensemen Matt Donovan of Denver and Brian Dumoulin of Boston College.

Meanwhile, eight Hobey Baker Award finalists are among the 12 players named to the 2010 All-CHN First and Second Teams.

Leading the way up front is the nation's leading scorer, Maine's Gustav Nyquist, along with a pair of seniors that have led their teams to No. 1 seeds heading into this week's NCAA Regionals – Denver's Rhett Rakhshani and Wisconsin's Blake Geoffrion. The second team includes two of the nation's top goal scorers in Bobby Butler and Chase Polacek, followed by perhaps the nation's top two-way player, in Miami's Jarod Palmer. Of these six, only Palmer is not a Hobey finalist.

At defense, Wisconsin's Brendan Smith is the only Hobey finalist of the group.

In net, both Denver's Marc Cheverie and Cornell's Ben Scrivens are Hobey finalists, and their two teams are in the same NCAA Regional this weekend. Scrivens has three straight shutouts, and has passed Cheverie in the national lead in save percentage. For the season as a whole, Cheverie remained the first-team choice for CHN.

The All-Rookie Team had some tough calls, leaving out three members of this year's World Junior gold medal team – RPI's Jerry D'Amigo, Michigan's Chris Brown and Boston College's Chris Kreider. But it's hard to argue with the other three, and it does include another gold-medal winner in North Dakota's Kristo.
