Tigers' skid reaches three with loss at Bates

Sophomore Joan O'Neill scored four goals and added two assists to lead Bates College to a 16-4 win over Colorado College on Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.

The Tigers slipped to 7-5 after going winless during their three games against nationally respected opponents in Maine.

For the third consecutive game, CC fell behind early when the Bobcats rattled off five consecutive goals during the opening 8:18.

The Tigers got on the board with 20:47 remaining in the period when Grace Maloney scored off a feed from Maggie Defanti, but Bates responded with another five-goal flurry to build a 10-1 lead after 30 minutes.

Frances Staadt and Maloney trimmed CC's deficit to 10-3 just over seven minutes into the second half, but that was as close as the Tigers would get.

Bates responded with next three goals, and after Gioia Garden added Colorado College's fourth goal with 11:47 remaining in the game, the Bobcats added three more to close out the scoring.

Abby Fink had four saves for the Tigers during 51:28 between the pipes. Mara Krueger made four saves for Bates to earn the victory in goal.

Nancy Makuch had a game-high five ground balls for CC, while Maloney added four.

Maloney led the Tigers with two goals. Defanti added a pair of assists.

Colorado College plays an exhibition game against the Colorado State University club team next Saturday before closing out the regular season with a home game against Sewanee on May 2.
