The Colorado College men's soccer team used a suffocating defense and a timely goal from freshman sensation Brandon Ogilvie to defeat Birmingham-Southern College, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at a sun-splashes Stewart Field on the CC campus.
The Tigers are now tied atop the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 2-0-0 record and improved to 4-3-2 overall, going over the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Panthers slipped to 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
Colorado College allowed just nine total shots en route to its fifth shutout of the season. The Tigers have now played 286.15 since surrendering a goal during the third minute of the 1-1 tie vs. Wheaton College.
Senior goalkeeper Andy McGhie lowered his goals-against average to 0.95 while recording his fifth shutout of the season and the seventh of his career. McGhie finished with three saves, the first of which came on a soft header 4:23 into the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Shachar Hovan had just one save for Birmingham-Southern, but he got some much-needed help from his defense and the crossbar.
Colorado College sophomore forward Matt Fechter drilled the crossbar on a direct kick 2:09 into the contest, and then BSC senior defenseman Andrew Stein made a save on Wil Nelp's header off a Fechter corner kick 1:21 into the second half to keep the score deadlocked.
Ogilvie broke the tie in the 70th minute when he converted on a hard cross from freshman forward Sean Parham, taking the pass in front of the left post before Hovan could get back from the other side of the crease.
Ogilvie extended his goal-scoring streak to four games with his second consecutive game winner, both of which were set up by Parham.
The Tigers finished with an 18-9 advantage in total shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Colorado College embarks on a four-match road swing next weekend with games at Oglethorpe University and Sewanee on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
