Colorado College won for the fourth time in five games and squared its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record with an 80-69 victory over Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon at Reid Gymnasium.
Becky Luetjen scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to help the Tigers improve to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Pirates slipped to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.
After Staley Mullins gave Southwestern a 54-53 lead with two of her team-leading 19 points, CC went on a 13-4 run and took the lead for good when Marissa Gradoz scored off a feed from Jordy Stephenson with 9:18 to play.
Colorado College built a 66-58 advantage with 4:56 remaining, but Chelsea Leeders' three pointer with 4:25 left pulled the Pirates to within five points. Unlike the first half when the Tigers squandered a 16-point lead, CC made the clutch shots down the stretch.
A pair of Mullins free throws pulled SU to within 73-67 with 1:09 to go, but the Tigers made seven of eight free throws to pull away.
Colorado College took a commanding 33-17 lead when Emily Wattman-Turner drained a three-pointer from the left corner with 6:38 remaining in the first half. The Tigers, however, made only two of its next 11 shots from the floor and committed seven turnovers to allow Southwestern to pull to within 39-35 after 20 minutes.
Despite being limited to just 19 minutes because of foul trouble, Kalli Kemling finished with 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half.
Gradoz reached double figures for the second game in a row and the third time this season with 10 points. Wattman-Turner dished out a season-high five assists to go along with eight points and six rebounds.
Colorado College knocked down a season-high 10 shots from behind the arc, including eight in the first half.
Shae Seagraves and Anna Fareed scored 16 points apiece and Chelsea Leeder also reached double figures with 13.
Colorado College begins a run of four consecutive road contests next Saturday at SCAC travel partner Austin College.
