Two of the top players in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference went toe-to-toe on Sunday.
Colorado College's Becky Luetjen won the battle with a career-high 30 points, but Maggie Prewitt won the war as Centre College held on for an 82-74 victory at Alumni Gymnasium.
Luetjen became the 10th player member of CC's 1,000-point club and finished the game with 1,012. She also became the ninth player to reach that milestone and also record 500 or more career rebounds.
Prewitt scored four of her team-leading 27 points during the opening minutes to help the Colonels jump out to an 11-0 lead. Luetjen finally put the Tigers on the board 3:58 into the contest, but it was an uphill battle for CC the rest of the way.
Colorado College trimmed its deficit 24-22 with 7:43 remaining in the first half and trailed only by only three points at the break after Marissa Gradoz scored back-to-back buckets during the final 36 seconds.
Centre built a 53-44 when Paige Baechle completed a three-point play 5:29 into the second half, but the Tigers went on an 11-3 run during the next six minutes to pull to within a point on a layup by Luetjen with 8:30 to play.
The Colonels responded with seven consecutive points to re-gain command and made 15 of 18 attempts from the charity line to maintain their lead. Luetjen's basket with 48 seconds to play cut Centre's lead to 76-73, but the Tigers missed their final four shots from the floor.
Chelsea Benham posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Angela Tronzo and Baechle added 13 point apiece.
Colorado College dropped to 8-12 overall and 5-6 in the SCAC. The Tigers trail Western Division leading Hendrix by two games, but are only a game-behind second-place Trinity with five division contests remaining. Centre is tied for second in the Eastern Division with an 8-3 record and is 14-6 overall.
CC plays host to Austin College next Saturday at 4 p.m. for its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day and Pink Zone game.
