Fechter fuels blowout of Southwestern

Box Score Matt Fechter struck for four goals to propel Colorado College to a 5-1 victory at Southwestern University in a key Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 10-4-3 overall and climbed into fourth place in the SCAC with 15 points and a 5-3-0 record.

“It was a matter of time before we were going to bust out of the gates and have a game that was not a nail-biter,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “This happened to be the game. It was absolutely stupendous that after an exhausting game on Friday night at Trinity, where we played honorably in a 2-0 loss, we rallied to defeat Southwestern handily on its home field.”

Fechter opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he buried a shot from 18 yards at the top of the box off a cross from Alec Sowers, who picked up his first collegiate point.

The junior scored what proved to be his second game-winning goal of the season and seventh of his career when he chipped a shot over Pirate goalkeeper Nick Pierce in the 28th minute.

Southwestern sliced the lead in half when Timothy Eamma scored on a breakaway in the 31st minute, but Fechter got the goal back a little less than six minutes later.

The second half was scoreless until Fechter and junior forward Daniel Wright connected for the second time in the 75th minute. Freshman forward Stuart Beezley closed out the scoring with his first collegiate goal with six minutes remaining in the game.

Fechter now has four career multiple-goal games and has scored four markers on two occasions. The first was during a 6-1 victory over Oglethorpe University on Oct. 18, 2009.

CC posted a 13-10 advantage in total shots and a decisive 10-3 margin in shots on goal. The Pirates had 10 corner kicks, compared to just a pair for the Tigers.

Brian Graf stopped two of three shots while improving to 6-3-0 in goal.

Pierce made five saves for Southwestern.

Colorado College travels to Hendrix College for the regular-season finale on Friday night.
