Box Score Chris Lutz struck for a pair of goals in a span of 11:07 early in the first half to help Colorado College post a 2-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern College on a blustery afternoon at Stewart Field.
Lutz put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when he took a drop pass, drove around a defender to the top of the penalty box and beat a diving Sveinbo Grimsson with a shot just inside the right post.
The senior captain/midfielder recorded what proved to be his second consecutive game-winning goal in the 18th minute. Lutz played a cross from junior forward
Matt Fechter off his chest, and as the ball dropped toward the field, he drove it out of the air and into the top left corner of the net.
The Panthers cut their deficit in half when Emil Saevarsson scored on a header from six yards out off a cross from Brynjar Arnason, but that turned out to be the only shot that would get past
Forrest Marowitz.
Marowitz finished with three saves. He got a huge block from freshman defender
Andrew Worthington a little more than five minutes into the game after BSC's Tyler Evans tipped the ball around CC's junior goalkeeper and briefly appeared to have a shot at an open net.
Birmingham-Southern created another scoring chance early in the second half, but Armann Gunnlaugsson's jumping re-direct of a cross pass sailed just wide of the right post.
Grimsson made four of his five stops during the first half when Colorado College launched seven of its 11 shots.
The Panthers took nine of their 14 total shots in the second half, but only one got through to Marowitz.
The Tigers improved to 7-2-3 overall and 2-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. BSC dropped to 6-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.
CC returns to action on Sunday when the Tigers play host to Oglethorpe University at 11 a.m.
