Colorado College struck for three goals during the opening 9:47 and never looked back while completing a sweep of its two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against Wisconsin with a dominating 4-1 victory on Saturday night at the World Arena.
The fifth-ranked Tigers improved to 7-2-0 overall and 5-2-0 in conference play, and made a winner out of Scott Owens in his 500th game as head coach at his alma mater.
Junior forward
Scott Winkler gave CC its quickest lead in a game this season when he put a wrist shot from between the circles past freshman goalkeeper Landon Peterson for his second power-play tally of the season just 1:19 into the contest. Sophomore left wing
Jaden Schwartz set up the score and extended his point streak to 15 games with a precision pass from beside the left post.
Sixty-one seconds later, senior center/team captain
Nick Dineen knocked in the rebound of his own shot for the second night in a row after collecting a pass from senior defenseman/alternate captain
Gabe Guentzel.
The Tigers' third line produced the game's signature moment midway through the first period. After sophomore wingers
Dakota Eveland and
Jeff Collett worked the puck free in the right corner, Eveland sent a no-look pass to
David Civitarese, who broke free in the right circle. After the deking a Badger defender, Civitarese went one on one with Peterson and scored on a backhander after faking a shot to his forehand.
Colorado College added an insurance goal 4:01 into the third period when Collett scored the team's second shorthanded goal of the weekend. Guentzel started the play with a hard shot off the boards behind the net. Senior center
Tim Hall tipped the puck to Collett who beat Patterson with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Josh Thorimbert steered aside 24 Wisconsin shots while improving to 3-1-0 between the pipes. He made 23 saves before sophomore center Mark Zengerle found the net for the Badgers on a partial breakaway with 4:49 remaining in the contest.
The Tigers were perfect on the penalty kill for the sixth time in nine games after denying UW on all four of its opportunities. CC converted on one of its five chances with the extra man.
Peterson stopped 23 shots for Wisconsin, including 12 in the first period when the Tigers launched 15.
The Badgers dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 4-7-1 in league play.
Colorado College, which improved to 4-0-0 on the Olympic-sized sheet at the World Arena, travels to North Dakota for a two-game WCHA set next Friday and Saturday.
