Box Score Senior midfielder Katie Dorman scored a pair of goals in the second half to lead UTEP to 2-1 victory over Colorado College in a quarterfinal match of the 2011 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior forward
Brittney Lyman gave Colorado College an early lead when she settled a pass from freshman midfielder
Kaeli Vandersluis in the middle of the box and ripped a shot with her right foot passed Miners' goalkeeper Sarah Drilling in the 22nd minute.
In four career games against UTEP, Lyman has struck for six goals and an assist, and after the Tigers dominated the first half, appeared to have struck for her second game winner against the Miners.
The Tigers entered the game with a 10-0-1 record when scoring first and were 6-0-1 when leading at the break. CC had already recorded six 1-0 victories during the season, the most recent of which occurred last Friday in El Paso.
But on this day, Lyman's goal was not enough.
UTEP tied the game 2:01 into the second half when Dorman knocked the ball out of the grasp of junior goalkeeper Hannah Berglund and scored into an open net.
“I think everyone knows what to expect from UTEP,” head coach
Geoff Bennett said. “They try to get numbers forward and then try to outwork you. I thought we matched their intensity well in the first half and we came out in the second half and gifted them a goal. They did a great job capitalizing on their opportunities, but our girls played hard and I am proud of that.”
Just over four minutes after the tying goal, Drilling denied Lyman and sophomore forward
Lauren DiGregorio in a span of eight seconds to keep the game knotted at 1-1. She stopped Lyman's drive from the left side of the box and then got just enough of DiGregorio's shot from the right off the rebound to direct the ball past the far post.
The Miners took the lead in the 79th minute when Dorman's wind-aided floater from 25 yards out near the left sideline went inches under the crossbar.
Colorado College finished with a 12-9 advantage in total shots and a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
Drilling stopped eight shots for UTEP, while Berglund finished with five saves for CC.
Despite playing most of the season without four injured starters and losing a key reserve at the start of the week, the Tigers rebounded from a rough start to go 8-2-1 in C-USA and finish the season with a 10-7-3 record.
“Honestly, I don't know if any team in the country has dealt with as much injury adversity as we have this season,' Bennett said. “I am super proud of our kids. They rallied each and every time we needed them to rally, and it just seemed like whatever was thrown at us, our kids rose above it.
“We had a great year and finishing in second place in one of the top eight conferences in the country is a great accomplishment. I think our full body of work speaks more about this team than just one game."
