Box Score Forrest Baker scored off a corner kick with 1:23 remaining to give Southwestern University a 2-1 upset victory over Colorado College in a quarterfinal match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night.
The game appeared to be headed to overtime when Timothy Eamma's shot from the top of the box went off a teammate and sailed 10 yards outside of the right post. But the shot was ruled to have deflected off a Tiger defender to set up the deciding sequence.
Steven Resnik served the ball into the box and Baker put a header just over the fingertips of goalkeeper
Brian Graf. CC was unable to put any sustained pressure on the Pirates during the final 83 seconds.
Matt Fechter tied the contest during the 58th minute when he drilled a direct kick into the upper left corner from 20 yards for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
But unlike the 5-1 victory at Southwestern two weeks ago, the Tigers' could not break through SU's tightly-packed defense.
Colorado College nearly took the lead with 4:08 remaining, but a Pirate defender stopped
Daniel Wright's shot from 10 yards out in the center of the box.
Southwestern opened the scoring 10:50 into the match when an unmarked Eamma knocked the rebound of a shot by Evan Perkins into an open net. Graf made the initial save on Perkins' shot from 10 yards away, but was unable to control the rebound that went directly to Eamma.
It marked just the seventh time this season CC gave up the first goal of a game.
Graf ended the game with four saves, while Daniel Poole stopped three shots for SU.
The Pirates had a 15-8 advantage in total shots, but only a 6-4 difference in shots on frame.
The Tigers finished with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Colorado College finished the 2011 campaign with an 11-5-3 record.
