Becky Luetjen scored a team-high 17 points as the Colorado College women's basketball team held strong in a 66-64 victory over Hendrix College, Saturday afternoon in Conway, Ark.
The Tigers shot a season-high 49 percent on 25-of-51 shooting from the floor during their win over the Warriors. This was the second straight game where CC has won shooting 1-of-9 from long range.
With Colorado College down 9-6 with 14:43 left in the half, Luetjen completed a three-point play after making a layup and a free throw to spark a 14-4 run for the Tigers. The run ended with another three-point play by Luetjen to take a 20-13 advantage with 10:57 remaining in the first half.
Hendrix answered right back with a 14-3 run of its own to take a 27-23 lead with 5:23 left in the half. The Warriors held onto their lead and went into halftime with a 38-33 edge over the Tigers.
Hendrix held a moderate lead for much of the second half, but a layup by junior
Sarah Gunkel helped CC take its first lead of the half at 55-54 with 5:44 remaining in the game. Two baskets by senior
Jordy Stephenson helped the Tigers take one of their largest leads of the half at 59-55 with 4:47 remaining.
However, Katy Ashley-Pauly hit two consecutive three-pointers for the Warriors to retake the lead with 2:54 left in the game.
Down 62-59, Stephenson hit a layup and was fouled on the shot to have chance at a three-point play to tie the game with 1:04 left in the game. Stephenson made the extra point to tie the game for the 12th time at 62-62.
Freshman
Shelby Hanssen hit a layup with 27 seconds left in the game to help the Tigers take a 64-62 lead. With six ticks left on the clock, Luetjen was fouled and was sent to the charity stripe where she made both of her free throws to extend CC's lead to 66-62.
Hendrix was fouled with one second left in the game and was sent to the free-throw line, where Ashley-Pauley hit both her shots to end the game with Colorado College ahead 66-64.
Gunkel scored a career-high 14 points, while Hanssen added another 12 points to aid the Tiger offense. Gunkel and Hanssen led CC on the boards with a team-high eight rebounds each.
Jamie Tate led the Warriors with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Avery Roller and Ashley-Pauley added another 12 points apiece.
Colorado College improved to 6-5 on the season and is a perfect 3-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Hendrix fell to 2-7 on the season and 1-2 in conference action.
The Tigers next game won't be until the New Year as they host Barry College on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. in Reid Gymnasium.
