Marissa Gradoz scored 14 of her season-high 17 points in the second half as Colorado College rallied for a 64-61 victory over Trinity University on Saturday night at Reid Gymnasium.
Trinity built its largest lead of the game at 52-43 with 7:53 left in the game, but Gradoz answered with a layup to ignite a 14-3 CC run. Gradoz scored nine of the team's 14 points during that span to help the Tigers take a 57-55 edge with 2:41 remaining.
Trinity knotted the game with a layup by Murphy Burns, but junior forward
Kalli Kemling came back with a jumper to keep the two-point advantage with 1:08 remaining.
Trinity tied the game for the last time at 59-59 with a layup by Alison Salmon; however, Gradoz came back with a two-point play of her own to once again retake the lead for CC with 39 seconds left in the game. The Tigers held on to their lead to earn their fourth straight win.
The game saw its fourth tie midway through the first half when freshman forward
Shelby Hanssen hit a layup with 10:52 remaining to tie the game at 15-15. The Tigers took the lead with a layup by senior forward
Becky Luetjen at the 9:26 mark, but Trinity answered back with a 7-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage with 5:35 remaining in the half.
Hanssen hit a pair of free throws to cap a 5-0 for CC and knot the game at 22-22 with 3:13 remaining, but Trinity came back with a pair of free throws to take a two-point advantage. The Tigers came right back with a Kemling three-pointer from
Courtney Tyus to take a 25-24 lead with 1:54 remaining in the half.
Trinity took the lead again on a good layup by Taylor Hollins, but Tyus and Kemling matched up once more for another three-pointer at the 1:44 mark to take a 28-26 lead for CC. The teams each traded a pair of points and entered half-time with the Tigers ahead, 30-28.
Luetjen led the team in the first half, scoring all of her 13 points during that time. Hanssen scored 12 points to aid the Tiger offense, while Kemling added another 10 points.
Junior guard Hannah Hoopingarner, Tyus and Gradoz led the team on the boards with six rebounds each. Gradoz also paced the defense by tying her career high of four steals.
Colorado College improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Trinity fell to 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
The Tigers return to the road next week for a pair of games in Oregon. CC faces George Fox University on Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. and finishes the trip against Linfield College at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10.
