Colorado College overcame a 12-point second-half deficit, but could not hold on to five-point lead in the final minutes of regulation and dropped a 92-89 decision in overtime to Southwestern University on Sunday afternoon.
Becky Luetjen forced the extra session when she scored with two seconds to play in the second half, but was unable to connect on a desperation three-pointer as time expired to force a second overtime.
Luetjen posted her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with a career-high 31 points and 17 rebounds. She also had a game-high five steals.
The Tigers took an 81-76 lead when Alyssa Aldaz scored two of her nine points with 2:30 to play in the second half and CC was up 83-79 after Luetjen sank a pair of free throws with 1:25 to go.
Chelsea Leeder, who finished with a team-high 22 points, scored five straight points to put the Pirates ahead and Anna Fareed made the first of two free throws to give Southwestern a two-point advantage with 13 seconds left.
After Luetjen tied the game, Kalli Kemling stole the inbounds pass, but Emily Wattman-Turner's three-pointer as time expired was off the mark. Wattman-Turner established a career high with 19 points.
Katelyn Bartell scored 49 seconds into overtime to put SU ahead for good. The Tigers had four shots at taking the lead in overtime, but made just two of nine field-goal attempts during the extra five minutes.
Colorado College was able to stay within striking distance thanks to the Pirates' free-throw shooting. Southwestern missed 21 free throw attempts, which was nearly as many as the Tigers took.
Marissa Gradoz and Gracie Rennecker fouled out during the final three minutes of regulation, while Luetjen, Wattman-Turner and Kemling picked up four fouls apiece. CC was called for 31 fouls, compared to 19 for the Pirates.
Colorado College made just 10 of 35 (28.6 percent) shots from the floor during the opening 20 minutes and trailed 44-32 after Staley Mullins two of her 15 points 1:07 into the second half.
Luetjen scored 16 points during the ensuing 11:14 to ignite a 40-23 run that gave the Tigers a 72-67 lead with just under six minutes remaining in regulation.
CC' Sarah Gunkel recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 points and rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Colorado College still can earn a spot in the SCAC tournament. To accomplish that, the Tigers (9-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference) need to defeat Western Division leader Hendrix College and Millsaps College next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
