Tigers top Hendrix to keep tourney hopes alive

Becky Luetjen poured in 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Colorado College to a 64-52 victory over Hendrix College on Friday night at Reid Gymnasium.

The Tigers improved to 10-14 overall and 7-8 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and can lock up a berth in next week's conference tournament with a victory over Millsaps College on Sunday.

Luetjen posted her seventh double-double of the season and reached the 20-point mark for the tenth time. She also blocked four shots and dished out three assists.

Hendrix made five of its first seven shots to grab an early five-point lead, but Kalli Kemling scored four of her 11 points during a 10-0 run that gave CC the lead and an infusion of confidence.

After Christina Byler cut CC's lead to 21-17 with two of her 11 points, the Kemling and Mariss Gradoz had four points apiece as the Tigers closed out the half with a 10-5 run to build a 31-22 lead after 20 minutes.

Colorado College scored six of the first seven points to open the second half, but the Caty Hensy scored final four points during a 7-0 run that saw the Warriors pull to within 37-30 with 12:57 to play.

Emily Wattman-Turner scored five points during a 7-1 run that gave the Tigers an 18-point lead when Jordy Stephenson knocked down a jumper with 8:43 remaining in the game. The junior guard scored nine of her 12 points during a span of 2:52 midway through the second half.
