Morell, Fink propel Tigers past Adams State

Junior attacker Kelsey Morell had a hand in seven goals and sophomore goaltender Abby Fink stopped five of six shots as Colorado College cruised to a 16-2 victory over Adams State College in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Washburn Field.

Morell recorded career highs with four assists and seven points as the Tigers extended their winning streak in the first game of the season to eight. Fink made six saves during 30 minutes of action to earn the victory in goal. Sophomore Katie Stetson stopped one of two shots in her first-ever appearance between the pipes.

Sophomore attacker Lara Atkins scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 3:42 into the contest after taking a feed from Morell. Atkins found the net three times in her first game with the Tigers.

Freshman Robyn Bushman notched the first goal for the Grizzlies, who were playing their first game as a varsity program. But after she trimmed CC's lead to 3-1 with 24:39 remaining in the first half, the Tigers countered with nine unanswered markers to build a commanding 12-1 lead at the break.

Colorado College's Leslie Jacoby and Sarah Phillips struck for two goals apiece during the first half, while Kate Krieger added the final two tallies of the contest.

Freshman attacker Elise Burchard had a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut, while Madeline Scherer tallied in her first game with the Tigers.

Amanda Hisel, one of 17 first-year or red-shirt freshmen on the ASC roster, picked up her first career goal 31 seconds into the second half to complete the Grizzlies' scoring.

Colorado College finished with a 30-11 edge in total shots, including a 25-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Freshman Kristen Bates recorded nine saves while going the distance in goal for Adams State.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they play host to Swarthmore College at Stewart Field.
