Graf, Fechter help Tigers defeat Carleton

Box Score

Brian Graf earned his first career shutout and Matt Fechter struck for his sixth game-winning goal as Colorado College bounced back from its first loss of the season to defeat Carleton College, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bell Field.

Fechter scored the only goal CC would need in the 49th minute on the first shot of the second half. He took a touch pass from Daniel Wright on a direct kick and sent a laser over a five-player wall into the upper right corner from 25 yards out.

“That was a wonderful victory considering how we played in the heat and humidity on Saturday,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “When Fechter put the free kick away, all the fatigue was forgotten and everybody played their hearts out. I couldn't be prouder.”

The Tigers (2-1-2) got an insurance tally in the 77th minute when Ben Glass settled a throw-in near the top of the box on the left side, turned and knocked a shot from 17 yards off the goalkeeper's hands inside the near post. It was the first career goal for CC's sophomore midfielder.

Graf tied his season high with six saves, including four in the second half when the Knights launched 12 of their 18 total shots. He made a diving save on a low bullet by Tim Willis in the 84th minute to preserve the shutout.

The Tigers' junior goalkeeper improved his record to 2-0-0, lowered his goals-against average to 1.58 and raised his saves percentage to .789.

James Neher stopped three shots for Carleton (1-2-1), which finished the contest with an 18-10 advantage in total shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. CC was whistled for 19 fouls, while the Knights were called for six.

Colorado College returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when it plays host to Wittenberg University in the first game of the 2011 Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament.
