Box Score The Colorado College women's basketball team started the new year off on the right foot as it held on to beat Berry College, 70-65, Monday evening in Reid Gymnasium. With the victory the Tigers have extended their winning streak to three games.
Junior
Marissa Gradoz led the CC offense tying her season-high 17 points and also grabbed nine rebounds on defense. Senior
Becky Luetjen earned her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to lead the team on defense. Luetjen also handed out six assists to help run the offense and tie her career high.
As a team the Tigers shot 42.6 percent on the floor to produce their third straight game of shooting above a 40 percent.
Colorado College struck first as it opened the game with a 7-0 run. Berry's first points of the game didn't come until the 16:29 mark when Allison Lawrence hit both of her free throws. The Tigers answered back with a three-pointer by senior
Jordy Stephenson to take 9-2 lead with 15:53 left in the half.
CC held a 14-7 lead on two made free throws by junior
Sarah Gunkel, but Berry answered back with a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the game with 8:26 remaining.
With the game tied at 27-27 with 35 seconds left in the half, senior
Jenny Knapp hit a layup and was fouled on the shot and was sent to the line to complete a three-point play and send the Tigers into halftime with a 30-27 lead.
Colorado College carried its momentum into the second half as it went on a 6-2 run to begin the half.
The Tigers had one of its largest leads of the game at 57-46 after Luetjen hit a layup and made the extra point after she was fouled on the shot with 7:24 remaining in the game.
The Vikings attempted a comeback late in the game to pull within one point after Alexa Evans hit a three-pointer to cut CC's lead to 64-63 with 4:00 minutes left in the game.
Stephenson answered back with two made baskets to extend the Tiger lead to 68-63 with 1:35 remaining. Megan Walsh cut the lead to 68-65 off of a jumper, but Gradoz came back with a layup to help the Tigers earn the 70-65 victory.
Stephenson and Gunkel each scored in double figures for CC with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman
Courtney Tyus dished out a career-high six assists and tied her career-high four steals to aid the Tigers.
Berry was led by Mel McLean with 13 points and Chanlir Segarra with 12 points. Walsh led the Viking defense with 10 rebounds.
Colorado College improved to 7-5 on the season, while Berry dropped to 4-8.
The Tigers resume conference play as they travel to Sherman, Texas on Friday to take on Austin College at 6 p.m.
