Seniors win final game at Stewart Field

Box Score Senior forward Matt Fechter made the most of his final home game at Stewart Field and sophomore midfielder Alec Martinez provided a glimpse of what Colorado College can look forward to in the future.

Fechter and Martinez each struck for a pair of goals and set up one other score as the CC seniors celebrated their final game at Stewart Field with a 4-0 victory over Southwestern University.

“It was a wonderful conclusion to a terrific year at home,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “Our seniors have grown to be such good friends, yet they worked to incorporate the younger guys into their realm. Now, they need to lead the charge through the last two games of the regular season and the conference playoffs. It's looking good.”

The No. 22-ranked Tigers extended their unbeaten streak to a season-long eight games and improved to 12-3-2 overall. Colorado College also climbed back into second place in the SCAC with 17 points, two more than the Pirates who slipped to 11-7-0 overall and 5-4-0 in league play.

“We think we've proven we're a top 10 team, not just top 20,” Fechter said. “We've tied the No. 1 team in the country and we can battle with any team in the country. We're confident in our ability to play, and going forward we're not looking for two or three more games, we want six.”

Martinez scored the only goal CC would need in the 18th minute, blasting a high shot from the left side of the box after taking a feed from Fechter. It was the first-ever game winner for Martinez, as well as Fechter's fifth game-winning assist of the season and the eighth of his career.

The Pirates appeared to have tied the game midway through the first half, but the goal was waived off because one of their forwards fouled senior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz while he was attempting to catch the high shot.

Colorado College doubled its lead early in the second half, but this time it was Fechter finding the net with a crossing shot from the right side after Martinez slipped a pass to him from the top of the box.

Southwestern had a second goal nullified with a little more than five minutes remaining when the play was ruled offisides, and CC put the game away with a pair of goals in a span of 32 seconds in the 88th minute.

Martinez completed the first multiple-goal game of his career when he scored off a pass from sophomore midfielder Morgan Wack, and Fechter struck for an unassisted tally with 2:26 to play.

With his 15th goal of the season, Fechter moved into a tie with Andy Dorsey (1985-88) for 10th place on the program's all-time list with 43.

Anchored by senior defenders Nick Lammers and Ben Sandalow, the Tigers recorded their 10th shutout of the season and held an opponent to just one shot on goal for the third time this season.

“Our back line is amazing,” Marowitz said. “It's the best defense I've ever played with. It doesn't matter who we are playing, they play shutout ball. I didn't have a great game today and they stepped up and made some big plays.”

CC finished with a 27-4 advantage in total shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

“Southwestern is a class act,” Richardson said. “They play the game hard and they had some goals taken away. The way they stayed on the field while we recognized our seniors, Don Gregory and his team need to be applauded for that.”

Colorado College travels to Centenary College on Friday, Oct. 26, and Austin College on Sunday, Oct. 28, for its final games of the regular season.
