Chris Lesnansky turned in a dominating performance with a career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds, but the Tigers dropped a 71-65 decision to Augsburg College in the opening game of the 2012 Colorado College Thanksgiving Classic.
Lesnansky scored 16 points in the first half to keep the Tigers within striking distance. At the other end, Dan Kornbaum and Andy Seidlitz combined for 25 points to help the Auggies build a 38-30 lead after 20 minutes.
Augsburg made 15 of 25 field-goal attempts during the first half, and it turned out they were just warming up. During the final 20 minutes, the Eagles were 14-for-19 for a blistering 73.7 shooting percentage.
The Tigers trailed 61-49 with 7:41 to play, but senior forward
Ian Rewoldt scored five of his 12 points to help his team pull to within four points with 1:40 remaining on the clock. That, however, proved to be as close as CC would get.
Kornbaum made 13 of 15 shots from the floor en route to a 27-point performance. Augsburg also got 16 points from Seidlitz and 11 more from Tyler Schmidt. Parker Hines recorded nine points and a game-high six assists.
Junior point guard
Ryan Milne added nine points and four assists for the Tigers.
Augsburg (2-0) returns to action on Saturday against Benedictine University.
Colorado College (0-3) plays host to the Eagles on Sunday.
