Hot shooting earns CC first win of the season

Box Score Colorado College earned its first victory of the season as it beat Austin College, 67-58, in the Tigers' Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener, Friday evening in Reid Arena.
 
CC shot season highs in all three categories to earn the win over Austin. The Tigers shot 46.9 percent (23-49) from the floor, while shooting 63.6 percent (7-11) from long range. CC also went 14-of-15 from the charity stripe for a 93.3 free-throw percentage.
 
The Kangroos held a 7-5 lead over the Tigers with 15:15 left in the first half, but sophomore Courtney Tyus drained a shot from long range to ignite an 11-3 run. During CC's run, seniors Sarah Gunkel and Kalli Kemling each hit a three-pointer, while Kemling added a pair of baskets from the free-throw line to end the Tigers run with a 16-10 lead midway through the first half.
 
With just under seven minutes to play in the half, Tyus completed a four-point play after getting fouled on her made three-pointer to give CC a 25-17 lead. The Tigers cruised into halftime with a 38-32 edge over the Kangaroos.
 
Austin attempted a comeback during the second half cutting CC's lead to four points on two separate occasions, but the Tigers held strong not allowing the Kangaroos any closer.
 
CC held its largest lead of the game when Kemling nailed a pair of free throws with 1:23 remaining in the game to give her team a 65-53 lead and close the game out with a victory.
 
Kemling led the team offensively with 17 points along with a career-high five assists and five steals. Tyus was a point shy of her career-high, scoring a season-best 16 points, which included three of CC's seven shots from long range.
 
Defensively, Gunkel led the team with seven rebounds, while freshman Danielle Davis and Kemling each contributed with six boards apiece.

The Kangaroos (3-5, 0-3 SCAC) were led by Erin Riley with 18 points and Brianna Harvey with 13 points. Brooke Melton led the team defensively with nine rebounds and also added a team-high six assists for the offense.
 
Colorado College (1-7, 1-0 SCAC) continues to play against Austin College in Reid Arena at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
