Balanced offense keys CC victory

Box Score Balanced shooting by Colorado College helped the Tigers beat Austin College, 53-45 on Saturday evening in Reid Arena.

CC had three players score in double figures: sophomore Courtney Tyus led with 12 points, while seniors Marissa Gradoz and Sarah Gunkel each added 10 points apiece. Senior Kalli Kemling and freshman Danielle Davis chipped in nine and five points, respectively.

The Tigers' defense was strong in the first half, holding the Kangaroos to a 17.6 field-goal percentage from the floor on 3-of-17 shooting. CC also forced Austin into 10 turnovers with the help of Tyus who had four steals on defense.

The Kangaroos first field goals didn't occur until five minutes into the game when Christina Kime and Lexi Beeson hit back-to-back threes to give Austin a 6-2 lead with 14:12 remaining in the half.

The Tigers answered back with an 11-0 run that was sparked by a three pointer from freshman Katie Waters and capped with a three from Tyus with 5:38 left in the half.

The Kangaroos were able to cut their deficit to two points, but CC came back to build a nine-point lead at intermission on an 11-4 run to close out the half with a 25-15 edge at halftime.

Despite holding a 17-point lead advantage in the second half, Austin was able to chip away at the Tigers' lead with a 19-5 run. The run was sparked by Kime with a shot from long range and was capped with a three by Shayna Clardy, who scored 12 points during the run off of four shots from beyond the three-point line, with 57 seconds left in the game.

CC was able to stop the run when Brooke Melton fouled Gradoz, who made both of her baskets from the charity stripe. Tyus and Kemling contributed with a combined three points from the free-throw line to end the game on 5-0 run.

Gradoz led the Tigers with nine rebounds and six assists, while Kemling added eight boards on defense. Tyus led the team with five steals and also dished out four assists.
